I think God eats ice cream for breakfast

March 30, 2009

Do you ever look back on your day or week and think “not much happened”, and then realize that you have the memory of a mosquito and, in reality, quite a lot has happened in the past week? Or maybe that’s just me..

One week ago, Tuesday, was an eventful day for me. I spent the morning with Shelly and her ladies’ group serving lunch at a Missions of Charity home. Shelly blogged about it, so I won’t go into detail. However, I will tell you what I learned.

I confirmed that I enjoy observation. I like to observe what is going on around me, and then I jump in and participate. This can be a great asset, but I’m finding more and more that it’s a struggle. We were only at the Mission for a couple of hours. It took me 3/4 of that to take it all in. Then I only had 1/4 of the time left to really jump in and be alive. Now, I’m not always like this. Sometimes I just dive head first into what I’m doing, no problem. My next goal is to figure out when those times are, and how to make more of them.

I discovered dignity. Each person at this home is treated with great dignity and respect. Something which I believe, for the most part, I do, but to see it in such quantity was wonderful! Children who cannot feed themselves are kindly fed and cared for. Men and women with disabilities are respected enough to care for themselves. Those that cannot are fed (and I’m sure cared for in other ways, but we were only there for lunch) lovingly, and with compassion.

This trip is teaching me how vast, how majestic, how strong, is the body of Christ.

I enjoyed a great afternoon spending time with and getting to know Shelly. How grateful I am to have her close by! She is caring for me in ways that I didn’t know I needed. As are others. I often don’t know what I need until I realize that I was already cared for in that way. Now that is lekker.

When I returned to the centre in the afternoon, I was surprised in the kitchen with a lovely gift of a swimming pool. In the kitchen! Ok, ok, so I’m exaggerating a little. The water from the ceiling leak wasn’t THAT deep.

Wednesday was a celebration day. A friend here got a job after a month of searching. We went out to the South African equivalent of Applebee’s: just add a salad bar, a kid’s playzone, and a Native American name. And THEN, to Milky Lane for desert. Oh. My. Ice. Cream. Google it.

It’s taking too much brain power to recall the rest of the week. I know I watched a movie or two (post a comment and tell me the last time you saw Cool Runnings), made dinner for the neighbor and my roommate once or twice, played ultimate Frisbee again, and job searched.  Oh, and created a how-to with pictures guide for completing a mail merge. Go, go gadget administrator!

Live life well. Give someone you don’t know that well a hug today.

Design a closet space, huh? Sounds interesting…almost as interesting as coming up with a solution for your hammock!

And I haven’t seen Cool Runnings in ten years, but I think I remember that it was pretty awesome. Praying that you’ll enjoy your last two weeks and get home safe!
